RIDOT plans to open lane on I-95 tomorrow

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that it plans to open an additional travel lane on I-95 North in the area of traffic merging from I-195 West – between Exit 20 (Point Street) and Exit 21 (Broadway) – in time for the morning commute tomorrow, Wednesday, December 16, 2009. The opening is pending the completion of striping activities planned during the overnight hours tonight.

This segment of I-95 could not be built until the new ramp from I-195 West to I-95 North opened as part of the Iway project on October 22, 2009. The shifting of all lanes of I-95 North, left of the highway’s original alignment, also needed to take place before this lane was built.

The new travel lane will restore five lanes of travel in this area, with the right lane dedicated to access to the Broadway exit. RIDOT expects the new lane to improve congestion during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
