Governor Chafee Orders State House Dome Illuminated Green in Support of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month

Providence, R.I. - Governor Lincoln D. Chafee today announced the State House dome will be illuminated green today, August 2, in recognition of National Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month. The lighting is a symbol of support for those affected by the disease, and those who work to fund and find a cure.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease that causes severe muscle weaknesses. Recent advances in research have allowed scientists to begin human trials worldwide.

"It is important to bring awareness and raise funds for SMA so that we continue moving in the right direction," said Alyssa Silva, a 21-year-old braving the disease. "Green signifies the color of hope, and hope is the leading force that has kept the SMA community moving forward."

On August 12, the fourth Annual SMA Fundraiser will be held at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. For details, contact Silva, at 401-243-5953 or visit the link below.
